☽ What Happens in the Brain During Sleep?

There are two fundamental types of sleep: Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, also known as the Dreaming phase, and non-REM sleep, which consists of three distinct stages.

 When it comes to obtaining sufficient sleep, it's not the quantity but the quality of your sleep that determines how rested you feel. 

The key factor is the amount of REM sleep you experience each night.

☽ What is REM?

Rapid Eye Movement, or REM, is a stage of sleep when dreams usually occur and is considered to be the most important stage of sleep for cognitive function and emotional regulation.

During REM sleep, the brain shows heightened activity compared to other sleep phases. The REM stage closely resembles wakefulness, with brain activity reverting to beta waves, similar to those observed when you are awake and alert.

An average adult spends 20-25% (or around 90 minutes per 700 hours per year) of their time asleep in the REM stage.
